What You Should Know

All staff are required to undergo an induction training program when they first join or re-join a ship.  The following points outline some things you need to know, many of which will be expanded upon during formal induction.

·        You must be prepared to share accommodation, depending on your rank or position;

·        Contracts are generally of 4 - 6 months duration;

·        Be prepared to fund your initial air fare for joining your first ship, which is generally reimbursed by the cruise company upon successful completion of the contract, depending on contract terms;

·        All crew members are required to be trained in and participate in the Emergency Response Organisation of the ship.  This will require you to attend emergency musters and drills as well as be a part of the In Port Manning roster which requires you to periodically remain on board whilst in port to cover the emergency requirements of the ship;

·        All companies have a no drug policy, contravention of which results in instant dismissal and probable prosecution at the next port of call;

·        All companies exercise random drug and alcohol testing and impose limits on blood/alcohol levels;

·        All ships operate under a Code of Conduct which includes penalties, including instant dismissal, depending on the severity of the contravention.   Racial discrimination and sexual harassment policies are also in force;

·        Access to and use of passenger facilities and accommodation is restricted according to rank and status onboard.   As a general rule passenger areas are off-limits to staff except during working hours;

·        Passengers are not allowed in crew areas.

What You Need
